At Knott Alone – Hold Fast, we believe healing happens through purpose, connection and time on the water. Our programs are designed to meet veterans where they are—whether it’s a shared dinner, single day of learning, a week of shared work or an extended stay to truly reset and rebuild.

Step aboard for a day on the Chesapeake Bay with Dan or one of our veteran leaders. Learn the ins-and-outs of crabbing, experience the Knott Alone – Hold Fast shoreline restoration project and discover how purposeful work on the water (and outside in general) can clear the mind and open the door to meaningful conversation.

Healing takes time—and no one can do it alone. During a week with Knott Alone – Hold Fast, veterans immerse themselves in hands-on projects while connecting with others who share similar experiences. Each day brings new opportunities to learn, work and reflect, while evenings provide space for conversation and community that can make all the difference.

For those ready to take a deeper step, our upcoming three-month program offers the chance to become part of the Knott Alone – Hold Fast Team. Participants will not only learn the work of the water, but also teach and mentor others. The program combines peer support with therapeutic practices tailored to each veteran’s needs. Many will leave stronger, and some may even find a lasting role as part of the Knott Alone – Hold Fast family.

FAQs

What is Knott Alone – Hold Fast?

Knott Alone – Hold Fast is a veteran-led nonprofit on the Chesapeake Bay that helps fellow veterans heal through purposeful work, time in nature and peer-to-peer connection. We provide programs that range from single-day outings to immersive multi-month stays, all built around the belief that no veteran should have to heal alone.

Who can participate in Knott Alone – Hold Fast programs?

Our programs are open to veterans of all branches and service eras. Whether you’ve just transitioned out of the military or have been a civilian for years, if you’re seeking purpose, connection and support, Knott Alone – Hold Fast is here for you.

Do I need any experience on the water?

Not at all. Our programs are designed for everyone, regardless of background or skill level. You’ll be guided by experienced veterans who will teach you everything you need to know about working the water, crabbing and shoreline restoration.

What types of programs do you offer?

We currently offer:

Day Trips: A single day on the water learning hands-on skills and connecting with fellow veterans.

Week-Long Stays: Immersive experiences combining work, reflection and community.

3-Month Immersion: An extended stay that allows veterans to become part of the Knott Alone – Hold Fast Team, mentor others and receive tailored support for long-term healing.

How does Knott Alone – Hold Fast help veterans heal?

We combine three powerful elements:

  • Purposeful Work – hands-on labor like crabbing, oystering and shoreline projects.
  • Nature-Based Therapy – the restorative peace of the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Peer Connection – open, honest conversations with other veterans who “get it.”

Together, these create space for healing, resilience and renewed purpose.

How much does it cost to participate?

There is no cost to veterans to join our programs. Hold Fast is funded through donations, seafood sales and community support.

Can family members participate?

While our core programs are veteran-focused, family involvement is an important part of healing. Community dinners and certain events are open to spouses, children and supporters.

How can I get involved if I’m not a veteran?

Community members can support Knott Alone – Hold Fast by donating, purchasing seafood that funds the mission, attending events or volunteering. Every contribution helps us extend a lifeline to more veterans.
